In-Person Non-lawyer Volunteer
Use Your Current Skills
As a non-lawyer volunteer, you will help provide quality legal services to individuals who don’t have the resources to pay a private lawyer.
Under the supervision of qualified and licensed NOMAS lawyers and Accredited Representatives, you will:
- Perform legal intake interviews with prospective clients,
- Listen to prospective clients and gather important facts about their situations, and
- Help gather evidence and prepare immigration petitions and applications.
Other Details
As a non-lawyer volunteer who commits to volunteering once a week for at least two months, you will have free access to an eight-week virtual training course on the Fundamentals of Immigration Law. The course is offered every two months in English and Spanish.
Non-lawyer volunteers who complete the Fundamentals of Immigration Law course may choose to continue volunteering long-term and complete additional free training to apply for certification from the Department of Justice as an Accredited Representative.

Good writing skills
Attention to detail
English OR Spanish fluency required
NO prior legal experience required
Pay for and pass a background check before volunteering (cost: approx. $10)
