As a non-lawyer volunteer, you will help provide quality legal services to individuals who don’t have the resources to pay a private lawyer. 

Under the supervision of qualified and licensed NOMAS lawyers and Accredited Representatives, you will:

  • Perform legal intake interviews with prospective clients,
  • Listen to prospective clients and gather important facts about their situations, and
  • Help gather evidence and prepare immigration petitions and applications.

Other Details

As a non-lawyer volunteer who commits to volunteering once a week for at least two months, you will have free access to an eight-week virtual training course on the Fundamentals of Immigration Law. The course is offered every two months in English and Spanish.


Non-lawyer volunteers who complete the Fundamentals of Immigration Law course may choose to continue volunteering long-term and complete additional free training to apply for certification from the Department of Justice as an Accredited Representative.

Attend eight two-hour clinics in person on a Tuesday or Thursday night (once a week for 8 weeks)

Passion for serving others

Good writing skills

Attention to detail

English OR Spanish fluency required

NO prior legal experience required

Pay for and pass a background check before volunteering (cost: approx. $10)
